These serial numbers can be used only as a reference point
An Exact date does not make a material difference to an assessment of a piano - a year or so out 120 years ago really is neither here more there.

The idea that 100% accuracy for all piano makers over a century ago is an interesting thought - but considering that all record keeping would be hand-written and kept in large ledger books, inaccuracies are likely. These records will be as reliable as the clerks whose job it was to keep them. The digital age of barcodes and scanned labels was still in the realm of science fiction. So we have to be content with our best guess numbers.

Hello. I have an upright piano made by Nathaniel Berry and Sons of London. The serial number is 11555. I want to get it repaired but the repairman says he needs the year manufactured and type of wood. Could you please help me?
ReplyDeleteHi, sorry for slow response!
DeleteSerial Number implies it was made 1908/1909.
Alas - Berry pianos were not brilliant pianos to start with so really has little value and not with spending a lot of money to repair!
Sorry for bad news - and again for being late!
Hi, I got for free piano made by Nathaniel Berry & Sons London sn. 23996 that suggest year 1927 Looks good and need some cosmetic repair. Is it worth to repair it? What's the real value of it?
ReplyDeleteHi,
ReplyDeleteIf you need it to be a nice-looking piece of furniture, it might make sense to tidy it up but there is no real value to it. Sorry!
